Mechanical engineering

Mechanical engineers are lateral thinkers in roles that require creativity, imagination and the ability to be adaptable.

Having an eye for detail, being an excellent communicator, and being able to work under pressure is also important.

Mechanical engineers design, build, operate and maintain a wide range of machinery: transportation, domestic appliances, power provision, building services.

They may also be involved in developing quality control systems in manufacturing by studying and improving the mechanical processes and machinery on production lines.

Mechanical engineering is involved in many industries, including:

  • Plastics
  • Heating and Ventilation
  • Hydraulics
  • Transport

Mechanical engineers may be involved in the design work, construction, and maintenance of machines, tools and systems with machine parts.

They may prepare plans and drawings of machines and machine parts, and provide recommendations, including budgets, for clients.
